Join us this October for our annual challenge event!

Join us for Illuminate Your Practice: 21 in 31, the 6th installment of our annual challenge to dive more deeply into yogic practice and philosophy, and endeavor to complete 21 classes in the 31 days of October. This year we are exploring the kleshas, causes of suffering, through the illuminating lens of a classic personality assessment known as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.

What is a klesha?

Pronounced KLAY-shuh, these come to us through the classic yoga text Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and are broadly thought to be ‘poisons’, mental states that cause suffering. Throughout October, we will look at the 5 kleshas and how they correlate with our personality types and tendencies toward cognitive biases. In doing so, we may come to clarify our thinking and purify our perception.

What you will learn

In accordance with the 5 weeks of October, you will learn about each of the 5 kleshas: avidya, asmita, raga, abhinivesa, dvesa.

Along with each klesha, you will be offered information relating to a corresponding personality type dichotomy as defined by the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator, or fun quiz all about YOU which you will fill out to kick off this whole event!

We will then consider more modern understandings of the kleshas as we often see them today as cognitive distortions and biases.

Kleshas

The kleshas come to us through the classic yoga text Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and are broadly thought to be ‘poisons’, mental states that cause suffering and disconnection.

Sutra 2.3: avidyā-asmitā-rāga-dveṣa-abhiniveśā kleśa

The 5 kleshas:

  • Avidya / Ignorance

  • Asmita / Ego

  • Raga / Attachment

  • Abhinivesa / Fear of death

  • Dvesa / Aversion, dislike anger

Personality Types

The personality types we will use throughout this exploration are those defined by the Myers-Briggs Trait Indicator (MBTI). The MBTI identifies 4 dichotomies by which to define personalities, resulting in 16 possible types. You will find out your type at the very start of this challenge! You will also be provided a short description of each of the 16 types.

The 4 personality dichotomies are:

  • Extraversion / Introversion

  • Sensing / Intuiting

  • Thinking / Feeling

  • Judging / Perceiving

Cognitive Biases

These are systematic and repetitious distortions of perception which often arise from our uniquely subjective worldviews, including but not limited to - lived experiences, traumas, ancestry, culture, and most notably for our exploration tendencies born of personality strengths and weaknesses.

A few we will touch on:

  • Overgeneralizing

  • Control Fallacy

  • Sunk-Cost Fallacy

  • Catastrophizing

  • Predictive Thinking
